To me, this is ultra-comfort-food!
This dish evokes the same sort of comfort, satisfaction & feeling you’d associate with mac ‘n cheese, except that it’s better – and it’s better for you {obviously}.
My love for cabbage started quite recently actually, when we had a layover in Frankfurt on our last vacation.
Hubby insisted that I try some good ol’ sauerkraut and German sausages…
Well, I never would’ve guessed how lovely some stinky cabbage could be, perfectly partnered with the most exquisite German sausages… Aah…
Since then, I’ve been cooking a lot more cabbage!
This dish is so simple and dead-easy {my 4-year-old could make it}, yet it’s a total game-changer in the hearty comfort-food category.
The smokiness of the sausage, along with the almost-sweet, almost-creamy cabbage and sharp mustard – now THAT is good food.

Smoked sausage, such as Bratwurst, slow-cooked along with cabbage and finished off with hot English mustard - total comfort-food perfection.
|
- 1/2 head Cabbage
- 6 Bratwurst
- 1/2 cup Chicken stock
- 1 tbs Hot English Mustard
- 100 gram Salted Butter
- Cut up the sausage - leave a few whole - and place them in a slow cooker.
- Add the shredded cabbage, chicken stock & butter.
- Set the slow cooker to 'high' and cook for 2-3 hours.
- Add a tablespoon of hot English mustard to the sauce just before serving and mix through. Serve with extra mustard on the side.
Using a slow-cooker really saves you heaps of time, PLUS it keeps in all the nutrients of the food and is actually a really healthy, nutritious way to cook! 😉
Give it a try – I’m certain you’ll love it! {Especially during the cold winter months…}
