Tuna Melt Bake

This Tuna Melt Bake is serious comfort food, yet still quite light and just delicious.

And the kids LOVED it – always a bonus for a mom!

Tuna melt bake

Who remembers Tuna Mates?!
I used to love it as a teen – a box {!!} with pasta shells and some ghastly powdered cheese sauce, to which you add some milk and tinned tuna, pop it into a pot and let it cook according to the instructions on the box.

Although the thought of that makes me feel ill now, there’s something ultimately delicious about a warm baked dish with tuna and melty cheese…

My Tuna Melt Bake delivers on that comfort, without any artificial powdered ingredients or pasta.

Servings: 4-6
You will need:

1 medium head of cauliflower
one cup cheddar cheese, grated
1 cup Mozzarella cheese, grated
2 tins shredded tuna in brine, drained
1 egg
1 cup cream
large pinch of salt
pinch of white pepper

Steam the cauliflower for 2 minutes, until just tender, then slice thinly.

Whisk the egg, cream, salt and pepper together, then mix in the tuna, Mozzarella cheese and cauliflower.

Spoon the mixture into a small, greased, roasting dish and top with the cheddar cheese.

Bake at 180C for 40 minutes.

I’ve been a bit off cauliflower for a while now, simply because I had a packet of open raw cauli rice gone off in the fridge and it ranked!!!!!!

So needless to say, I haven’t really had an appetite for the stuff, but I’m over it now.

In any case, if you have too much of anything, you’ll get bored of it and that might also have been the case with me and cauliflower…

This bake is slightly sweet {cauli}, creamy, cheesy and salty all at the same time! I could devour bowls of the stuff!

{And my 3-year-old actually did just that!}

So simply, yet ultra tasty – I’ll be making this one often!

Sounds delicious! Did you use the small 5 oz cans of tuna or the larger 9 oz cans?

      Hi Jeannie,

I used 2x regular cans, so you can use 1 large or 2 small…
It’s a firm favourite in our house! And on Pinterest too ;)

      Enjoy! x
